One DDR4 Stick Stopped Booting After a Ryzen 5700X Upgrade

I had four 8GB DDR4 sticks installed and recently replaced my Ryzen 5 3600 with a Ryzen 7 5700X. After the upgrade, one memory stick no longer allows the system to boot, while the other sticks work normally. I did not handle or move the RAM during the CPU installation, so I'm trying to figure out whether the module itself failed or whether the new CPU, socket, BIOS settings, or memory controller could be responsible. What tests should I perform to identify the cause?

Test the suspected stick by itself in every memory slot, then repeat the same test with a known-good stick. If the questionable module fails in every slot while the good one works, the module is probably defective. If it only fails in certain slots, the problem may be related to the CPU’s memory controller, the socket, or motherboard contact.

AM4 memory channels connect through the CPU, so a CPU installation issue can affect RAM even if you never touched the modules. Remove the 5700X, inspect the pins and socket carefully under bright light, check for debris, and reseat the CPU. Also make sure the cooler isn’t applying uneven or excessive pressure.

Clear the CMOS and update the motherboard BIOS to a version that properly supports the 5700X. Then install the memory one stick at a time and test after each addition. Four DIMMs or mixed kits can be harder for the memory controller to handle, especially with XMP or other overclocked memory settings enabled, so test everything at default speeds first.

If possible, reinstall the old Ryzen 5 3600 and see whether all four sticks work again. That comparison can help separate a bad DIMM from a CPU, socket, BIOS, or memory-controller problem. It’s also worth checking whether the modules are a matched kit and have compatible rated speeds and timings.
