One DDR4 Stick Stopped Booting After Upgrading to a Ryzen 7 5700X

I had four 8GB DDR4 sticks installed and recently upgraded my CPU from a Ryzen 5 3600 to a Ryzen 7 5700X. After the upgrade, one stick no longer allows the system to boot, while the other sticks work. I didn't remove or handle the RAM during the CPU replacement, so I'm trying to figure out whether the memory module actually failed or whether the new CPU, socket, BIOS, or memory configuration is causing the problem. What should I test first?

Four DIMMs can be harder for the memory controller to run, especially with XMP or mixed memory kits. Try booting with one stick at a time using default BIOS settings, then add the modules back individually. If the sticks aren’t from one matched kit or have different speeds and timings, the system may become unstable when all four are installed.

On this platform, the memory controller is inside the CPU, so a CPU installation problem can affect a memory channel even if the RAM was never touched. Check for bent or dirty contacts and make sure the cooler isn’t applying uneven pressure. Reinstalling the old CPU can also help confirm whether the problem follows the new processor.

Make sure the motherboard BIOS supports the 5700X and update it if necessary, following the board manufacturer’s instructions. Afterward, load default settings and test the memory before enabling XMP. Also verify the RAM configuration by swapping the suspected module with a known-good one in the same slot.

Test the suspected stick by itself in every memory slot. If it fails in all four slots while the other sticks boot normally, the module is probably defective. If it works in some slots but not others, the issue is more likely related to the CPU’s memory controller, the socket, or motherboard contact. Clear the CMOS, then reseat the 5700X and inspect its pins and the socket carefully under good lighting.
