PC Freezes During Startup After Installing a Ryzen 5000 CPU

I installed a new Ryzen 5 5000-series processor in my system with a B550 Eagle WiFi 6 motherboard. The motherboard should support the CPU, but the computer freezes during startup and sometimes gets stuck on "Preparing Automatic Repair." The system works normally again when I reinstall my old CPU. What should I check to determine whether this is a BIOS compatibility issue, faulty RAM, or a defective processor?

Even if the motherboard BIOS is from 2024, verify that its exact version supports your specific Ryzen 5000 model. The easiest approach is to reinstall the old CPU, boot into the BIOS, check the version, and update it using the motherboard manufacturer's instructions. After updating, load the default BIOS settings before installing the new processor again.

I reinstalled the old CPU and the computer is working again, so I’m going to update the BIOS before testing the new one.

Run a memory test and try each RAM stick individually, preferably in the recommended slot. A bad module or unstable memory settings can cause startup freezes, even if the RAM seemed fine with the old processor. Also try clearing the CMOS and leaving memory overclocking profiles disabled.

Since the system works with the old CPU but not the new one, the BIOS version or the new processor itself are the most likely causes. Update the BIOS first and make sure the CPU is seated correctly, the cooler is mounted evenly, and the power connectors are fully plugged in. If the problem remains after a BIOS update and memory testing, the new CPU may be defective.
