I'm planning to upgrade from my Radeon RX 5600 XT, which is increasingly struggling at 1440p. I often have to lower settings, use aggressive FSR, and still run into poor frame rates or the card's 6GB VRAM limit. My budget is around $500, and I'm considering the RX 9060 XT 16GB at about $500 or stretching to the RX 9070 GRE 12GB at roughly $570. The GRE appears to be around 20–30% faster, so the extra $70 seems worthwhile. My system has a Ryzen 7 5700X, 32GB of DDR4-3000 memory, and a 1440p 144Hz monitor. Which card offers better value for 1440p gaming, and is 12GB of VRAM enough for current and upcoming games, or would the 9060 XT's 16GB be the safer long-term choice?

If maximum longevity and high-resolution textures are your top priority, the 9060 XT’s 16GB gives you more breathing room. Some newer games can already exceed 12GB at 1440p with maximum settings, and running out of VRAM can cause stutters rather than just lower average FPS. That said, 12GB is still generally workable if you are willing to reduce textures from Ultra to High, so I’d only pick the 9060 XT if you strongly value the extra memory or cannot stretch the budget.
I’d choose the RX 9070 GRE if you can comfortably afford the extra $70. A roughly 30% performance increase is much more meaningful than having four additional gigabytes of VRAM, and 12GB should be adequate for most 1440p gaming right now. The faster GPU should also remain useful for longer before you need another upgrade.
The GRE looks like the better value between these two. The extra VRAM on the 9060 XT is reassuring, but the card may not have enough raw performance to take full advantage of 16GB in demanding future games. If the GRE eventually needs lower texture settings in a few titles, it will probably still deliver better overall performance than the 9060 XT.
That’s the frustrating part of this generation: 12GB can already be limiting in some poorly optimized games at 1440p, while 16GB may be more memory than the slower card can effectively use.
VRAM matters, but it shouldn’t be considered in isolation. The GRE’s substantially higher performance is guaranteed, while future VRAM requirements are uncertain. I’d take the GRE unless you plan to keep the card for many years and refuse to lower texture quality.
