I'm new to building PCs and am trying to choose between the Ryzen 5 8400F and Ryzen 7 5700X for a gaming system with an RTX 5060. They cost roughly the same, but the 8400F uses the newer AM5 platform while the 5700X uses older AM4 hardware. I've seen conflicting claims about their gaming performance and don't want to choose AM5 just because it is newer if the 8400F performs worse. I also don't expect to upgrade the PC for about four or five years. Which processor and platform makes more sense for this build?

AM5 is the better long-term platform. If you decide to upgrade the CPU in a couple of years, you can potentially keep the motherboard and memory, whereas AM4 is effectively at the end of its upgrade cycle. The 5700X is still a perfectly capable gaming CPU, but future upgrades are limited mostly to older chips such as the 5800X3D, whose used-market pricing can be unusually high.
For gaming, the Ryzen 7 5700X is generally the stronger choice between these two, especially if the total AM4 build costs less. The Ryzen 5 8400F benefits from AM5 and DDR5, but it is not the AM5 processor I’d usually target. With an RTX 5060, either should handle 1080p gaming well, and putting money saved on the platform toward a faster graphics card could make a bigger difference.
If you want AM5, look for a Ryzen 5 7500F instead of the 8400F. It is typically a better gaming option and gives you a stronger upgrade path. The downside is that AM5 motherboards and DDR5 memory can raise the cost, so it may not be the best value for a lower-budget build right now.
For a strict budget gaming build, also compare the Ryzen 5 5600. It is often close to the 5700X in gaming while costing less, and the savings could be used on the graphics card or a better power supply. If the AM5 parts only cost a little more overall, though, choosing a Ryzen 5 7500F-based system would give you more flexibility later.
