Should I buy a 9070 XT and 9900X now, or wait for the next-generation hardware?

I'm planning to build a gaming PC for a 1440p 280Hz monitor and am considering a Radeon 9070 XT paired with a Ryzen 9 9900X sometime in December or January. I'm hesitant to buy now if the upcoming RDNA 5 graphics cards or Zen 6 processors will offer a major improvement shortly afterward. Should I wait for the new generation, or buy current hardware? I'm also planning to stream, so I'd like advice on whether an eight-core processor is enough and whether an X3D chip would be a better choice for gaming.

For gaming, an X3D processor makes more sense than the 9900X. A 9800X3D would be a strong match for a high-refresh-rate 1440p display, while a 7800X3D or another discounted X3D model could offer better value. The 9900X is a good general-purpose CPU, but its extra cores don’t usually translate into better gaming performance.

Streaming is generally fine on an eight-core CPU, especially when using GPU-based encoding. A 12-core chip is worth considering only if you’ll also do heavy rendering, editing, compiling, or other sustained multicore workloads.

Waiting is mainly worthwhile if you can comfortably use your current system and don’t mind an uncertain release schedule. New processors and GPUs may be announced around January, but announcements don’t guarantee immediate availability, reasonable pricing, or a large enough performance jump to justify delaying your build. If you need the system for gaming soon, current hardware is the safer choice.

The graphics card should be your priority for 1440p high-refresh gaming. The 9070 XT should handle that resolution well, and a 9800X3D would pair nicely with it if you want strong frame rates in CPU-limited games. A cheaper 7000-series processor could also be a sensible temporary option if you’re genuinely unsure about the next generation.

If you need the PC soon, buy when you’re ready rather than trying to predict future launches. The 9070 XT is already more than capable for 1440p, and waiting could mean higher prices or limited availability. Don’t buy parts months apart, though—get the main components together so you can test everything within the return period.
