I recently moved to an AM5 platform with a Ryzen 5 7600X3D and 32GB of DDR5 after my previous motherboard failed. I also upgraded from a 500W power supply to an 850W be quiet! Pure Power 13 M because I plan to replace my current GTX 1660 Ti 6GB.
I found a Gigabyte Windforce RTX 5070 12GB for $580 at Micro Center and reserved one for pickup. I originally wanted an RTX 5070 Ti with 16GB, but those are currently around $1,000–$1,100. I'm also considering a Radeon RX 9070 XT, especially since one is available locally for about $670, though I was hoping to stay with Nvidia for DLSS and ray-tracing features.
I currently use a 1080p 240Hz monitor but plan to move to a 1440p OLED display. I play esports titles such as Rocket League and Valorant, along with AAA games like Battlefield 6, the next Call of Duty, Elden Ring, and other single-player games. Would the RTX 5070 be a good match for the 7600X3D and a sensible choice for 1440p gaming? Should I take the $580 deal, wait until I can afford a 16GB card, or choose the RX 9070 XT for its stronger conventional performance? I'd appreciate advice based on ray tracing, upscaling, VRAM, and real-world gaming performance.

AMD has improved significantly with both upscaling and ray tracing. Although Nvidia generally has an advantage in those features, the RX 9070 XT’s extra raw performance can outweigh that difference in many games. At the same price, the 9070 XT would be an easy choice, but with the RTX 5070 at $580 and the 9070 XT at around $670, the decision is closer. Compare benchmarks with ray tracing, DLSS, and FSR enabled, then decide whether Nvidia’s features are worth the premium to you.
The best choice depends on how much you personally value DLSS and ray tracing. Look for side-by-side benchmarks using the games you actually play, with ray tracing and each card’s upscaling enabled. If the visual difference is minor to you, the 9070 XT’s higher raster performance and larger VRAM capacity may make it the stronger 1440p option. If you specifically want Nvidia’s feature set, $580 is a reasonable price for the RTX 5070.
The RTX 5070 is a perfectly good match for the Ryzen 5 7600X3D, and the CPU should have no trouble keeping up with it. At 1440p, that combination should perform very well, especially in esports games. Nvidia may also be the better choice if you expect to use productivity or creative applications that are better optimized for Nvidia hardware. For gaming only, though, the RX 9070 XT is worth considering because it offers considerably more raw performance for not much more money.
