I'm new to building PCs and mostly play visually demanding single-player games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2. I also play Fortnite, where high FPS matters more to me than maximum visual quality. I'm trying to decide between an RTX 5070 Ti, Radeon RX 9070 XT, or possibly an RTX 5080. I've heard that the 5070 Ti and 9070 XT are excellent for 1440p and can handle 4K, but I've also heard that 4K may require lowering settings or choosing a more powerful card. Would either of those cards provide smooth performance and impressive graphics at 4K for story-focused games, or is the RTX 5080 a much better choice? I'm also considering a good monitor, possibly OLED, and would appreciate advice on whether 1440p OLED offers a better overall experience than standard 4K. A CPU recommendation for this kind of build would also be helpful.

The difference between 1440p and 4K is noticeable, but the panel itself can have an even bigger impact. OLED offers deeper blacks, better contrast, and faster pixel response than a typical IPS display, which can make games look much more impressive. A 5070 Ti or 9070 XT with a 1440p OLED would give you excellent image quality and plenty of performance. Your current 3080-class performance is already enough for high settings around 60 FPS in many games at both resolutions, so either newer card should be comfortable for story games. For very high FPS in competitive games, CPU performance becomes increasingly important.
Both the RTX 5070 Ti and RX 9070 XT can play games at 4K, especially if you’re targeting around 60 FPS and are willing to adjust a few settings. They’re better suited to 1440p if you want consistently high frame rates or maximum settings. For mostly single-player games, 4K is perfectly usable, while competitive games generally benefit more from a lower resolution and faster response. A 5070 Ti paired with a capable modern CPU and a quality 1440p monitor would be a strong, balanced setup.
That sounds close to what I’m considering. I want strong visuals without overspending, so a 5070 Ti with a good midrange or high-end CPU and a 1440p monitor may be the right balance.
I’ve seen how much better OLED looks compared with my old TV, so I’m definitely considering it. I’m still unsure which CPU would pair best with either GPU and whether a 1440p OLED makes more sense than a standard 4K display.
