I'm about to build or buy a prebuilt gaming PC and I'm stuck between spending roughly $3,000–$4,000 on a system with an RTX 5080 that looks great, or spending around $2,500 on a similar build with a Radeon RX 9070 XT. The rest of the components would be nearly identical. I could always switch to Nvidia later if prices become more reasonable, but I'd like to make the right choice now. I already have 360Hz Samsung OLED G6 monitors and want to run demanding AAA games at high settings, ideally at least as well as my PS5 Pro. Is the 5080's extra performance and Nvidia features worth the additional cost, or would the 9070 XT be the smarter buy?

I’m running a 9070 XT with a high-end X3D processor and it has been excellent. It handles games smoothly and feels like a much better-balanced purchase than spending thousands more for a relatively modest performance increase. If your goal is to replace console gaming with PC gaming, the 9070 XT should be more than capable of running current AAA releases at high settings. A good monitor and CPU will probably make a bigger difference to the experience than moving up to the 5080.
For most gaming builds, the RX 9070 XT is the better value. The RTX 5080 is generally only around 15% faster, while the price difference can be $1,000 or more. That money could go toward the monitor, processor, storage, or simply stay in your pocket. The 9070 XT should handle modern AAA games very well, including 1440p and respectable 4K gaming. Just research the specific card model carefully, since cooling quality varies between manufacturers.
That makes sense. My main concern is finding a 9070 XT model that looks good without costing almost as much as a 5080.
Choose the RTX 5080 if you specifically care about Nvidia features such as DLSS, stronger ray tracing, CUDA, local AI workloads, or frame-generation support. It is the faster card and can be a better fit for demanding 4K gaming with ray tracing enabled. For ordinary rasterized gaming, though, the performance gap is not large enough to justify a huge premium unless you are completely comfortable spending the extra money.
The answer depends on resolution and the games you play. At 1440p, both cards are extremely capable and the difference will often be hard to notice. At 4K, the 5080’s extra performance and Nvidia’s upscaling and ray-tracing advantages are more useful. If you play mostly multiplayer games, the 9070 XT is probably plenty. If you want maximum settings, ray tracing, and the best available Nvidia features, the 5080 is the safer premium option.
