I'm building a new PC and plan to buy the graphics card tomorrow. Most of the build is already decided, but I'm stuck between an NVIDIA RTX 5070 costing roughly $800–850 in Egypt and an AMD RX 9070 XT costing around $850–900.
The 9070 XT appears to offer significantly more raw gaming performance, better rasterization, and 16 GB of VRAM, while the RTX 5070 has NVIDIA's feature set and a reputation for more dependable drivers. I've heard that AMD driver problems can cause crashes and compatibility issues, and warranty claims are extremely difficult where I live, so reliability and long-term durability matter more to me than simply getting the highest benchmark score.
I'm also wondering whether upcoming DLSS technology will meaningfully improve the RTX 5070's performance and usable lifespan, or whether those claims are mostly marketing. Could it eventually help the 5070 compete with the 9070 XT, especially at 1440p?
The GPU will mainly be used for gaming, with a few Windows server and networking lab virtual machines. My monitor is a 27-inch 1440p display. The rest of the system includes an Intel Ultra 7-270K Plus, a 1000W 80+ Gold PSU, an ASUS B860-PLUS motherboard, 32 GB of DDR5-6400 memory, and a 2 TB WD Black SN850X NVMe SSD. The RTX 5070 can make sense if you prioritize ray tracing, DLSS, or a specific NVIDIA-dependent workload. It can also deliver a smooth experience even if it gives up some raw performance. However, don’t buy it based on promises about future DLSS features; treat those as a bonus rather than something that will transform the card into a higher performance tier.
Both brands can have occasional driver issues, and individual game support matters more than old generalizations about either company. NVIDIA may still be preferable if you rely heavily on path tracing or certain creator and AI software, but for a Windows 1440p gaming system, there is no obvious reason to avoid the 9070 XT solely because of drivers.
For gaming, the RX 9070 XT is the stronger choice. It is a tier above the RTX 5070, has 16 GB of VRAM, and should age better at 1440p. At only $50–100 more, the extra performance and memory make it the better value unless you specifically need NVIDIA features for work or certain applications.
If the prices are really that close, I would take the 9070 XT for a pure gaming build. The RTX 5070 is closer to the lower performance tier, while the 9070 XT competes more directly with the RTX 5070 Ti. The larger VRAM capacity is also useful for future games and high-quality textures.
The driver situation with current Radeon cards is much less concerning than the reputation suggests. Several owners report using the RX 9070 XT for months with only isolated, game-specific problems. You can also avoid immediately installing every new driver and stick with a version that is known to be stable.
That was my main concern, since returning a faulty card would be extremely difficult here. It’s reassuring to hear that current cards aren’t generally having constant driver problems.
