Should I choose the RX 9070 with 16GB of RAM or the RX 9060 XT with 32GB?

I'm building a system with a Ryzen 5 9600X and can afford either an RX 9060 XT 16GB paired with 32GB of DDR5, or an RX 9070 paired with only 16GB of DDR5. The RX 9070 seems roughly 50% faster, but I'm wondering whether the extra GPU performance is worth giving up half the system memory. I mainly want to play games such as Subnautica 2 and the newer Assassin's Creed titles, along with other AAA games at 1440p. Would I notice a major difference with only 16GB of RAM?

If buying 16GB now is the only way to afford the RX 9070, one 16GB DDR5 stick can be a reasonable temporary solution. Add a matching stick later to reach 32GB and enable dual-channel operation. However, two-stick kits are preferable, and mixing modules later can sometimes cause compatibility or stability issues, so buy a reputable module with specifications that should remain easy to match.

Using one stick will reduce memory bandwidth compared with two sticks, although the penalty is usually less severe on DDR5 than on older memory platforms. It’s still better to plan for the second module rather than leaving the system with 16GB permanently.

Get the 9070 and treat 32GB as your first future upgrade. If you only have a game, Discord, and normal background tasks open, 16GB should generally be enough for now. The extra GPU headroom will be more noticeable at 1440p than the additional system RAM.

Just keep an eye on newer games, since 32GB is gradually becoming more common in recommended specifications. You may need to upgrade sooner than someone who mostly plays older or lighter titles.

I’d choose the RX 9070. At 1440p, especially in demanding AAA games, the stronger GPU will make a much bigger difference than going from 16GB to 32GB in most gaming situations. Sixteen gigabytes is still workable as long as you aren’t running a lot of other demanding programs at the same time.

The 9070 also costs quite a bit more in some regions, so the performance difference is fairly proportional to the price. Still, it makes sense if gaming performance is the priority.
