Should I choose the Ryzen 5 5600G or Ryzen 7 5700G for an affordable gaming PC?

I've been saving up to build an inexpensive PC for gaming and some coding. I won't have a dedicated graphics card, so I'm choosing between processors with integrated graphics: the AMD Ryzen 5 5600G and Ryzen 7 5700G. Benchmarks make them look fairly similar, and I mainly want to play games like Fortnite and Rocket League without spending too much. Which processor offers the better value?

The 5700G has eight cores compared with six on the 5600G, plus a slightly stronger integrated GPU, but the gaming difference is pretty small. For a budget build, I’d choose whichever is cheaper unless you specifically need the extra CPU cores for heavier coding or multitasking. I wouldn’t pay a large premium for the 5700G.

For Fortnite, Rocket League, and basic coding, the 5600G should be enough. Its integrated graphics are close enough to the 5700G that the extra money usually isn’t justified. Also check the price of the 5600GT, since it may be a good alternative depending on local pricing.

Keep in mind that both G-series chips have less L3 cache than their non-integrated-graphics counterparts, and their integrated graphics will struggle with newer demanding games. They’re fine for lighter games at sensible settings, but a future dedicated GPU upgrade may be better paired with a regular Ryzen 5 5600.

If you can fit a graphics card in the build, a Ryzen 5 5500 or 5600 combined with an inexpensive used card such as an RX 580, GTX 1060, or RX 5600 XT would deliver much better gaming performance than either integrated GPU. If you need to start without a graphics card, though, the 5600G is the safer budget pick and you can upgrade later.
