Should I Choose the Ryzen 7 9800X3D or Ryzen 9 9900X3D for Gaming?

I'm planning to upgrade from an i9-12900KF paired with an RTX 5090 and 64GB of 6400MHz memory. I'm not expecting a huge performance jump, but I would like a gaming CPU that runs cooler, especially in CPU-bound games. I use this PC exclusively for gaming, so productivity performance is not important. I'm leaning toward AM5 because it should offer a better future upgrade path, potentially allowing me to move to a newer processor in the next few years. Would the Ryzen 7 9800X3D or Ryzen 9 9900X3D make more sense?

The 9900X3D uses a split-chiplet design, and its gaming performance doesn’t make it a clear upgrade over the 9800X3D. Unless you also do heavy rendering, compiling, or other multi-threaded work, the 9800X3D is the more sensible option.

For a gaming-only system, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the better choice. The 9900X3D’s extra cores are more useful for productivity, while games generally benefit more from the 9800X3D’s straightforward eight-core design and large 3D cache.

You could also try undervolting the 12900KF first. A stable negative voltage offset can reduce temperatures and sometimes improve sustained boost speeds. Since undervolting can cause instability, test gradually rather than applying an aggressive offset.

I tried undervolting shortly after buying the 12900KF, but I couldn’t get it stable. I’m not very experienced with tuning, so replacing the platform still seems like the safer route.

The 9800X3D should be more than enough for gaming with an RTX 5090, and AM5 gives you a reasonable upgrade path. You’ll need a compatible AM5 motherboard and DDR5 setup, but there’s no need to overspend on an extreme motherboard or a large 420mm cooler unless you specifically want those features.
