Should I Focus on Python, Learn C Early, or Study Another Language Before College?

I'm about to start college and already know some basic Python from high school. I can write small programs, but I'm still a beginner. My first-semester courses will probably teach C, and I've also heard that Java and C# are useful languages to know. Should I keep improving my Python, start learning C ahead of time, or try to study another language alongside my coursework?

C is a solid language for learning the fundamentals because it exposes details that higher-level languages often hide, such as memory and how programs interact with the computer. Understanding those concepts can help you later with Python, Java, C#, and other languages. You don’t need to master every language right now—focus on the one your classes require and choose additional languages later based on what you want to build.

That makes sense. I’ll focus on understanding the fundamentals instead of worrying about collecting a bunch of languages.

Don’t overload yourself before college starts. You’ll have new classes, assignments, and plenty of other adjustments to handle. If you know C is on the curriculum, spend a little time getting comfortable with its basics, then prioritize keeping up with your actual courses. Python is still great for personal projects because it lets you build things without getting stuck on every low-level detail.

Good point—I hadn’t considered how much time the rest of college would take. I’ll keep my preparation focused and manageable.

Since C is going to be part of your first semester, getting a head start on it is probably the most useful option. You’ll be learning the language anyway, and some familiarity beforehand can make the coursework less overwhelming.
