I recently started learning Python, covered the basics, and practiced some programming problems with it. I can write working code, but I still don't feel like I intuitively understand what's happening underneath it all. It feels like being able to play a song on guitar without understanding the chord progression or scale behind it.
I've heard that C is lower-level and forces you to learn more about memory, pointers, data structures, compilation, and how programs interact with the machine. I tend to learn best by building from first principles rather than starting with practical applications.
My goal isn't necessarily a software job—I'm an actuary learning this mainly for enjoyment. Python is probably more practical for my work, but I'm not finding it especially fun. Would switching to C help me develop a deeper understanding of computer science and how computers work, or can I learn those fundamentals just as well with Python?

You don’t have to abandon Python permanently. Most programming concepts carry across languages, and the best language depends on the project. Python is convenient for tasks like data analysis and spreadsheet processing, while C is better for learning what happens closer to the hardware. Rust, Go, or Zig can also provide a modern systems-programming experience with more safety, but C has the advantage of exposing the classic fundamentals directly.
A good path is to learn C while building small projects instead of trying to master every detail up front. Start with terminal input and output, arrays, strings, structs, linked lists, and manual memory management. Then look into how compilers and linkers work, and eventually study assembly or a computer-building course if you want to understand the machine more fundamentally. C is a useful tool for that journey, but it won’t replace those other subjects.
If your main goal is deep understanding and you’re learning for fun rather than trying to get hired quickly, C is absolutely worth trying. It makes memory, data representation, pointers, and compilation much more visible. Just don’t expect the language alone to teach all of computer science—you’ll still need to study algorithms, operating systems, computer architecture, and theory.
C can teach useful low-level concepts, but it isn’t automatically a better introduction to every fundamental. Data structures and algorithms can be learned perfectly well in Python, and theoretical computer science is mostly about mathematics and models rather than a particular programming language. C becomes especially useful when you want to understand memory layout, pointers, linking, and how compiled programs work.

That’s the situation I’m in. I’m not under career pressure, and Python hasn’t been very enjoyable, so learning C for the deeper challenge sounds appealing.
