I currently have a Ryzen 5 7600 installed on an ASRock B650 Pro-A, and a Ryzen 7 9800X3D is on the way. I'm debating whether to keep the motherboard or replace it before upgrading.
My main concern is the past AM5 CPU-degradation issue involving excessive SoC voltage, especially with X3D processors. I know newer BIOS versions include AGESA fixes and voltage limits, but I still see conflicting reports about whether the problem is completely resolved on ASRock boards.
Would updating my current motherboard to the latest BIOS be sufficient, or would replacing it with another board be worthwhile for better long-term peace of mind? I plan to use PBO, but I don't need an especially high-end motherboard.

I wouldn’t automatically replace the board. The voltage issue wasn’t conclusively tied to one motherboard brand, and boards from multiple manufacturers were affected. Current BIOS releases include the relevant voltage protections, and reports of new failures are much less common now. Update the BIOS before installing the new CPU, leave SoC voltage on automatic, and use a boxed processor with an AMD warranty if possible.
The important distinction is the BIOS version and actual voltage behavior, not simply the logo on the motherboard. Before installing the 9800X3D, flash the newest stable BIOS, load default settings, and verify that SoC voltage stays within AMD’s recommended limit. Avoid manually increasing SoC voltage. If the processor is a tray or OEM chip, check the seller’s warranty carefully because it may not have the same AMD coverage as a retail boxed CPU.
Some people would still avoid ASRock after seeing reports of individual failures, including cases where a BIOS update appeared to resolve the problem afterward. That doesn’t prove every ASRock B650 board is dangerous, but if the replacement cost is small compared with the CPU, switching brands can eliminate some anxiety. Otherwise, keeping the existing board with the latest BIOS is a defensible option.
If replacing the motherboard wouldn’t hurt your budget, it can still be a reasonable choice for peace of mind, especially since the CPU and cooler will already be removed during the upgrade. I’d choose a current B650 or B850 board from a reputable manufacturer with a recent BIOS and good warranty support. You don’t need an expensive model just to run PBO on a 9800X3D.
I’m using an ASRock B850M board with a Ryzen 7 9700X. I updated the BIOS shortly after building it, but I still worry whenever the system starts because of the failure reports I’ve seen. If I had the money and time to change boards, I probably would, although that’s more about peace of mind than clear evidence that the board is currently unsafe.
