Should I replace my dead motherboard with a Ryzen 5600 system or move to AM5?

My current system has an Intel i5-11400, a B560-class motherboard, and 16GB of DDR4 memory. The motherboard appears to have failed: the fans and lighting turn on, but the computer never reaches POST. Finding a suitable replacement has been surprisingly difficult, and even basic compatible boards seem to be out of stock.

I'm considering switching to a Ryzen 5 5600 with a B550M motherboard because it would let me keep using affordable DDR4 memory. The alternative is a more expensive AM5 build using a Ryzen 5 7500X3D, but that setup would cost more than twice as much. I was also considering using a single 16GB DDR5 module, although I'm not sure whether that would hurt performance.

I have an RX 9060 XT 16GB graphics card, a roughly 620W Seasonic power supply, and mainly play games at 1440p. Would it make more sense to stay with an inexpensive DDR4 platform, look for a used replacement motherboard, or spend more on AM5?

Before replacing the whole platform, check secondhand B560 or Z590 boards. They should work with the i5-11400 and are often much easier to find than new H510 boards. If you can get one at a reasonable price, that is probably the cheapest solution.

A less expensive middle option is a newer DDR4-compatible platform, such as an Intel 14th-generation setup with a DDR4 motherboard. It is also effectively a dead-end platform, but it can offer more performance than AM4 without requiring new memory. The best choice depends on whether your priority is minimum spending now or having a future CPU upgrade path.

If you go with AM5, do not use a single 16GB DDR5 stick. Ryzen benefits from dual-channel memory, so use a matched 2x8GB kit at minimum, or preferably 2x16GB if the budget allows. A single module can noticeably reduce performance and leaves less usable capacity for modern games.

A 5600X3D-class processor would be a stronger gaming choice than the regular 5600 if you can find one around the $170 range. Pairing it with an inexpensive AM4 board gives you much better gaming performance without paying for DDR5 and a full AM5 upgrade.

If you decide to build new while keeping DDR4, a Ryzen 5 5600 with a reasonably priced B550 board is fine for 1440p, especially when paired with that graphics card. However, AM4 has no meaningful upgrade path left, so it only makes sense if keeping the cost as low as possible is the priority.
