I'm building my first PC and recently bought an RTX 5070, but it's still unopened because I'm waiting for the rest of my components. I've now found a Radeon RX 9070 XT for only about $15 more and am wondering whether I should switch.
The system will use a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL36 memory, and an Asus Prime B850M-A motherboard. My main use will be gaming on a 240Hz monitor, along with some general work and web development.
The 9070 XT appears to offer more performance and VRAM, but I'm also aware that Nvidia may be preferable for CUDA workloads, DLSS, certain drivers, and software compatibility. I don't currently know whether any of my work applications require CUDA. Is the 9070 XT the better choice at essentially the same price, and is there anything else I should check before returning the 5070?

The one reason to keep the 5070 is if your work software uses CUDA, or if you strongly prioritize Nvidia’s driver and feature support. CUDA is Nvidia’s platform for GPU-accelerated applications such as some AI, rendering, and compute workloads. If your web development and other programs don’t depend on it, that concern probably doesn’t apply.
Yes, the RX 9070 XT is a significant step up from the RTX 5070 and is closer to an RTX 5070 Ti in performance. It also has more VRAM, which is especially useful at 1440p or 4K and should help it age better. Unless you specifically need CUDA for an application, I’d return the unopened 5070 and get the 9070 XT.
The main thing to verify first is your power supply. Check the recommended wattage and available connectors for the specific 9070 XT model before making the swap.
For gaming value, the 9070 XT is the obvious choice at only $15 more. Rasterized performance is considerably higher, and FSR has improved a lot. DLSS can still be a little sharper and Nvidia generally offers a more polished experience in some games, but the difference isn’t automatically worth giving up the extra performance and VRAM.
I’ve used both, and the upscaling results are fairly close overall. DLSS tends to look slightly crisper, while FSR can look a little softer, so personal preference matters.
