I'm currently using an Intel i5-10400F with an RTX 3060 and am considering a CPU upgrade. Moving to AM5 would require a new motherboard and DDR5 memory, while AM4 could let me stay with DDR4. Is AM5 unnecessary for my current graphics card, and would an AM4 upgrade make more sense given current prices? I don't have a strict budget, but I'd rather not spend heavily on DDR5 if it won't provide much benefit for this system.

The RTX 3060 should work perfectly well with your current processor, so a CPU upgrade isn’t urgent. If you want a better long-term platform and can afford the motherboard and DDR5, AM5 makes more sense now, and you can upgrade the graphics card later. If you’re trying to keep costs down, AM4 can still be a worthwhile upgrade, especially if you can reuse existing DDR4 memory.
It mostly comes down to your spending limit and upgrade plans. AM5 gives you a newer socket with more future CPU options, but it also means paying for DDR5 and a compatible motherboard. AM4 is cheaper and mature, though its upgrade path is much more limited. With an RTX 3060, either platform is reasonable, and you probably won’t see a dramatic gaming improvement unless your current CPU is actually limiting performance.
That’s my main concern—I don’t want to pay a premium for DDR5 if the 3060 won’t benefit much from the platform change right now.
