I'm trying to decide whether to replace my RTX 3080 now or keep it for another generation. My system has a Ryzen 7 5800X, 32GB of DDR4 memory, an 850W power supply, and runs Windows. I play at 1440p and aim for high refresh rates, mostly in newer AAA single-player games and Battlefield 6. I'm also interested in ray tracing and path tracing, and I prefer NVIDIA because I'm comfortable with its features and software ecosystem.
The 3080 is still usable, but its 10GB of VRAM and overall performance are starting to feel limiting in newer games. I've also experimented with frame-generation mods and have been impressed with the results. My realistic upgrade options are a 5070 Ti, stretching to a 5080, or simply waiting for the next generation and hoping prices improve.
I've seen discussion about possible changes to VRAM production and upcoming GPU architectures, which makes me wonder whether waiting could actually lead to higher prices instead of better deals. On the other hand, I may be worrying about market rumors more than necessary.
If you upgraded from a 3080 to a 5070 Ti or 5080, how noticeable was the difference at 1440p, particularly in demanding ray-traced or path-traced games? Would you buy now, wait, or choose a different option?

It may also be worth considering competing cards if price is the main concern. Some alternatives offer stronger raster performance and more VRAM for the money, although sticking with NVIDIA is completely reasonable if you value its features and are happy with the ecosystem. The important thing is to compare actual prices and game performance rather than assuming the newest generation will automatically be a better deal.
I’d avoid making the decision based on rumors about memory supply or a future architecture. GPU prices can rise even after a new launch, and there’s no guarantee the next generation will offer better value. Buy when your current card is preventing you from enjoying the games you play; otherwise, keep the 3080 and save the money for a genuinely large upgrade.
I moved from a 3080 to a 5070 Ti and the upgrade felt substantial, roughly comparable to the jump I experienced going from an older midrange card to the 3080. The biggest improvements were in demanding games, ray tracing, and situations where VRAM usage was high. At 1440p, it isn’t necessary for every game, but it gives much more breathing room for newer releases.
If the 3080 is still delivering the performance you want, I’d wait. It remains a strong 1440p card, and buying a 5070 Ti only makes sense if the VRAM limits or ray-tracing performance are actively bothering you. Nobody can reliably predict whether the next generation will be cheaper, though, so don’t wait solely because you expect prices to fall.
The 5070 Ti seems like the sensible middle ground if you want to upgrade now. I’d still stay with NVIDIA in this case. If someone already prefers its software and features, a cheaper competing card isn’t automatically the better purchase just because it has better specifications on paper.
