I've had my prebuilt PC for about four to five years and I'm trying to decide whether to upgrade it, buy another prebuilt, or build a new system from parts. My current hardware is an AMD Ryzen 5 5600G, a B550 UD AC motherboard, 16GB of DDR4 memory, and an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060. I'm certain I want to move to 32GB of RAM because I plan to do more video editing, recording, Photoshop, and Illustrator work. I'm not very experienced with PC hardware yet, so I'm unsure which parts are worth replacing and whether a complete rebuild would offer better value. I'm also considering upgrading the GPU, although I may keep it if it's still capable. What would be the most cost-effective upgrade path?

A simple upgrade to 32GB of RAM and a Ryzen 7 5800X3D would provide a noticeable boost while letting you keep the rest of the system. However, the 5800X3D can be expensive now, so compare its total cost with moving to an AM5 motherboard, CPU, and DDR5 memory. For multitasking, both RAM and CPU matter: more RAM helps prevent slowdowns when several creative applications are open, while the CPU affects rendering, exports, and overall responsiveness.
When Photoshop and Illustrator are open together, is lag mainly caused by insufficient RAM, the CPU, or a combination of both?
Your RTX 3060 is still a reasonably capable GPU, so the biggest improvements would probably come from the CPU and memory. You could look for affordable used parts, but upgrading within the older AM4 platform has limits. A Ryzen 5 5600 is already fairly solid, and a higher-end AM4 chip such as the 5800X3D may not be worth the price compared with moving to a newer AM5 platform.
