Should I Upgrade My GPU or CPU First for Better Gaming Performance?

Deadlock is my main game right now, and I'm considering upgrading my PC. It currently has an Intel Core i5-12600K and an RTX 3050 8GB. I'm leaning toward upgrading the graphics card first, but I'm wondering whether that would also noticeably improve performance in games that are more CPU-heavy. I built the system myself a while ago and currently use a 650W Bronze-rated power supply.

The 12600K should be able to deliver high frame rates in most games, so I wouldn’t rush to replace it. A GPU upgrade makes the most sense first, although the exact improvement in CPU-heavy games depends on your resolution, graphics settings, and target FPS. If you’re already CPU-limited, lowering or raising graphics settings won’t change the frame rate much.

Upgrade the GPU first. The i5-12600K is still a capable gaming processor and shouldn’t hold back most modern graphics cards, especially at higher resolutions. The RTX 3050 is the much weaker part of this setup and is likely why you’re relying on ultra-low settings to stay above 100 FPS.

Your CPU is still quite serviceable, while the RTX 3050 is limiting your performance much more. A stronger graphics card should give you a noticeable improvement in visual quality and frame rates. Just check the card’s power requirements and connectors against your 650W Bronze power supply before buying.
