My current system has a Ryzen 5 5600X, GeForce RTX 3070, 32GB of DDR4 memory, an ASUS PRIME B550-PLUS motherboard, and a 750W Be Quiet! Straight Power 11 Gold power supply. I mainly play at 1080p, and games like Path of Exile 2 and Aion 2 can drop to around 30–50 FPS in towns or demanding late-game areas. I'm considering either an RTX 5070 Ti or a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but moving to the 9800X3D would also require a new motherboard and DDR5 memory. Would upgrading only the graphics card work with my current motherboard, and what upgrade path would make the most sense?

Don’t use UserBenchmark as the deciding factor; its comparisons are widely considered unreliable. At 1080p, your Ryzen 5 5600X may limit performance in CPU-heavy areas, while a faster GPU would help more when you’re GPU-bound. A Radeon RX 9070 XT is worth considering because it can offer strong performance for the money, and it would work in your existing motherboard. Your 750W power supply should generally be adequate, but check the card’s power requirements and use the correct power cable or adapter.
Rather than replacing the entire platform for a 9800X3D, consider a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D if you can find one at a reasonable price. Those CPUs work with your current B550 motherboard and DDR4 memory, though you may need a BIOS update. Pairing one with an RX 9070, RX 9070 XT, or another well-priced GPU would give you a much more balanced upgrade without buying a new board and RAM. For a future platform change, a Ryzen 7 9800X3D would mean moving to AM5, a B650-class motherboard, and DDR5 memory.
The 5800X3D or 5700X3D sounds appealing because I could keep my motherboard and RAM. I’m going to check pricing before deciding between that and a GPU-only upgrade.
A new graphics card will work with the B550-PLUS. PCIe graphics cards are backwards-compatible, so you don’t need to replace the motherboard just to install an RTX 5070 Ti or RX 9070 XT. Since you play at 1080p, though, a very powerful GPU may run into the 5600X’s limits in CPU-heavy scenes. Make sure the card fits your case and that your 750W PSU has the required connectors and sufficient capacity.
I didn’t realize newer graphics cards were compatible with my current motherboard. I’ll compare the RX 9070 XT with the other options.
