I'm considering upgrading my GPU and would appreciate advice on whether I should keep improving my current system or start planning a completely new build. My current setup is an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, EVGA RTX 3080 10GB, 32GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR4 memory, an ASUS TUF Gaming X570-Plus Wi-Fi motherboard, a 2TB Samsung internal SSD, a Corsair RM850x 850W Gold PSU, and a Corsair 4000D case. I'm mainly interested in improving 1440p gaming performance and am looking at either an RTX 5070 Ti or RX 9070 XT. Would one of these cards be a worthwhile upgrade with my existing CPU and platform, or would the age of the system limit the performance enough that I should save for a new build?

For standard gaming, the RX 9070 XT is generally the better value and pairs nicely with the Ryzen 9 5900X. The RTX 5070 Ti makes more sense if you care about CUDA, AI workloads, ray tracing, or NVIDIA-specific software support. If you are considering Linux, AMD may also be the simpler choice for gaming.
The Ryzen 9 5900X is excellent for productivity, but some CPU-heavy games and very high refresh-rate gaming can expose its weaker 1% lows compared with newer gaming CPUs. At 1440p, the GPU will usually be the main limit, so the 5900X should be fine. If you mainly play competitive games at extremely high frame rates, a Ryzen 7 5800X3D would be the best drop-in AM4 upgrade and could extend the life of the system.
At 1080p or with a 240Hz target, the 5800X3D upgrade would matter more. At 1440p or 4K, especially with demanding graphics settings, the benefit would be smaller because the GPU becomes the bottleneck.
The main decision is whether you want a relatively inexpensive upgrade now or a longer-term platform replacement. A 9070 XT plus a 5800X3D could be a very effective way to extend the current build, particularly if the AMD card is substantially cheaper than the 5070 Ti. A new platform gives you a longer upgrade path and potentially several future GPU upgrades, but it will cost much more and is not necessary for good 1440p performance today.
Either card should work well as a direct upgrade from the RTX 3080, and your 5900X is still capable enough for strong 1440p gaming. The best choice depends on the games you play, your target frame rate, and the prices you can find.
Your system is still quite strong, and a newer GPU should provide a noticeable improvement at 1440p. You do not need to replace the whole platform just to upgrade the graphics card. The 850W Gold power supply should also be sufficient, assuming it is in good condition and you use the appropriate power cable.
