My current flatscreen and VR games run smoothly, including Battlefield 6, but I'm wondering whether upcoming games such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 could expose a CPU bottleneck.
I originally planned to upgrade to a Ryzen 7 5700X3D, but it has become difficult to find new after being discontinued, so used listings are the main option. Would it make sense to hunt down a used 5700X3D or another X3D processor, or should I keep the Ryzen 5 3600 for another year and save for a complete platform upgrade?

If your games are already running smoothly, keeping the Ryzen 5 3600 for another year is reasonable. Since you’re planning a full platform upgrade, putting the money aside for that may be better than paying a premium for a hard-to-find processor now. Check actual CPU usage and frame-time drops before deciding.
If the only goal is to bridge the next year, a regular Ryzen 7 5700X could be a cheaper temporary upgrade. It adds cores and should help in CPU-heavy games, although it won’t provide the same gaming uplift as an X3D model. I’d compare its price with the cost of simply waiting.
Other X3D models are worth considering if the 5700X3D is unavailable.
