I accidentally knocked over a glass of milk and a small amount landed on my MacBook. I shut it down immediately, turned it upside down, and wiped away what I could. Most of the spill missed the laptop, but I saw a drop in the HDMI port and some milk under the Shift key, Enter key, and power button/Touch ID area. Only a small amount was visible near the top corner of the power button.
I've been told not to press the keys or try turning it back on, but how serious is this likely to be? Could the laptop still be okay if the spill was limited to that part of the keyboard? If it does develop a problem, is internal cleaning or repair something a shop or Apple can handle?

Keep it completely powered off and don’t repeatedly test whether it turns on. Milk is more troublesome than plain water because it leaves sugars, proteins, and minerals behind as it dries. Those residues can cause sticky keys, electrical shorts, or corrosion later. The safest option is professional disassembly and cleaning, especially since liquid reached the ports and power-button area.
It might be fine if the milk never reached the internal electronics, and some laptops survive small spills. However, being able to shut it down normally doesn’t prove everything is safe. Liquid can remain beneath the keyboard or around the Touch ID hardware and cause problems weeks or months later, so an inspection is more reliable than simply waiting and hoping.
Leave it upside down in a dry, well-ventilated place for at least 48–72 hours, but drying alone doesn’t remove milk residue. Don’t use heat, and don’t press the affected keys. A repair shop can open it, disconnect the battery, inspect the logic board, and clean any contamination with suitable high-purity isopropyl alcohol. That may prevent future corrosion, although it can’t undo damage that already happened.
