I accidentally spilled about 30 mL of 40% vodka on my five-year-old ThinkPad. It shut down roughly a second after the liquid hit it, and I immediately turned it upside down. I'm not sure whether the battery is removable and I'm not comfortable opening the computer myself. It's currently late at night, so I may need to wait until tomorrow to find a repair shop. What should I do now, and is the laptop probably ruined?

The fact that it shut itself off almost immediately is concerning, but it doesn’t prove the laptop is beyond repair. The outcome depends on where the vodka reached and whether it caused a short circuit. Leave it powered off, disconnect the charger, and avoid testing it repeatedly.
Vodka contains water and other substances that can leave residue after drying. Proper cleanup usually requires disassembling the laptop, carefully cleaning the affected boards with suitable high-purity alcohol, and checking for corrosion or damaged components. That can take enough labor that a repair may cost close to what an older used laptop is worth, but a technician can determine whether recovery is practical.
If you can safely disconnect the battery, do that as soon as possible, since remaining power can cause more damage while the liquid is inside. If you’re not comfortable opening the ThinkPad, leave it upside down and take it to a repair shop rather than trying to power it back on.
