I'm completely new to technology and keep getting confused by all the terminology. Could someone explain the basics in simple, beginner-friendly language? If you were starting from zero in 2026, what learning path would you follow, and which free or affordable resources would you recommend?

A few core programming ideas are worth learning early. A variable is a named value, while scope describes where that variable can be used. A function is a reusable group of instructions that usually returns a result. A procedure is similar but may simply perform an action without returning a meaningful value. Recursion means solving a problem by repeatedly applying the same process to smaller versions of it, such as searching through a dictionary by repeatedly narrowing the range. More generally, programming is about breaking a large task into small, precise, reusable steps. Once those ideas are comfortable, learning a specific language and its libraries becomes much easier.
Don’t try to learn “tech” as one huge subject. Choose one beginner-friendly path and build a foundation. A practical order would be: learn basic programming with Python, get comfortable using Git and GitHub, build small projects such as a calculator or to-do list, then learn basic databases and APIs. After that, choose a direction like web development, mobile apps, data and AI, or cybersecurity. The most important part is building things instead of watching tutorials forever. Start with something simple, get stuck, look up the problem, fix it, and repeat. Terms like frontend, backend, API, HTTP, and database make much more sense after you use them in a project. Beginner courses and videos are enough to get started; consistency matters more than finding the perfect resource.
