I bought an iPhone 18 Pro Max in a store about five days ago and traded in my iPhone 14 Pro Max at the same time. The employee never explained how the trade-in credit would be paid out, so I assumed it would go back to my original payment method. While reviewing my receipts today, I realized the trade-in amount appears to have been placed on a digital gift card, but I was never told about it or shown where to access it. Is there any way to have the trade-in value transferred back to my credit card, perhaps through a return and repurchase or a manager override? The store is about an hour away, so I would also like to know whether calling first could resolve this.

Trade-in credit is often issued as store credit or a gift card unless you specifically choose another option during the transaction. Since the sale has already been completed, a return-and-repurchase or refund to the original card may not be guaranteed, but a manager can confirm whether an exception is possible. It’s worth asking before assuming the gift card can be converted.
Call the store before making the trip. They should be able to confirm exactly how the trade-in was processed, help you locate the digital gift card, and explain whether anything can be changed. If a manager has discretion to fix it, the store can let you know what documentation to bring.
I’ll try calling first since the store is pretty far away. Hopefully they can sort it out over the phone or tell me what to bring in.
