VirusTotal flagged my setup.exe as a Trojan—what should I do?

I launched a file named setup.exe, but nothing appeared to happen. I then scanned it with VirusTotal and received two detections: ESET-NOD32 identified Win64/Kryptik.HPF Trojan, and WithSecure identified Trojan:W32/GenInflated.B. Malwarebytes has not found anything so far during a deep scan. Could this be a false positive, or should I assume my computer is compromised? What steps should I take now?

Treat the detections seriously, especially since you already launched the file. Disconnect the computer from the internet, avoid logging into accounts on it, and shut it down if you have access to a separate clean computer. From the clean machine, create a reputable antivirus rescue USB and scan the affected system offline. If the file came from an unofficial or cracked-software source, do not run it again—those files are commonly modified and can contain genuine malware. Afterward, change important passwords from a clean device and enable multifactor authentication. A clean Malwarebytes scan does not guarantee that the system is safe.

Two detections can occasionally be false positives, but the names indicate generic Trojan detections and the program failing silently is concerning. Keep the suspicious file quarantined or delete it, submit it to multiple reputable scanners, and check whether any new startup items, scheduled tasks, browser extensions, or unknown programs appeared after execution. If the file was run with administrator privileges or you cannot confidently verify the system is clean, backing up only personal documents and reinstalling Windows is the safest option.
