I maintain an open-source peer-to-peer file-sharing project that has around 200 stars. It is currently running on Azure through a one-year student offer, but that benefit will expire soon. I'm looking for reliable free or sponsored hosting for the backend. Are there cloud providers with programs for open-source projects? I noticed that DigitalOcean may no longer offer this, although I might be missing something. I already have a sponsorship button and a funding page, but the project is mainly a hobby and I'm not expecting much direct sponsorship.

Vultr has an open-source sponsorship program that may be worth applying for. When I used it, I linked the project repository and explained how the service was being used, then received a useful amount of cloud credit a few days later. The exact terms may have changed, but it’s worth checking.
It’s worth applying directly to provider credit programs instead of waiting for them to discover the project. Railway, Render, and Fly may have options for open-source projects, while Netlify and Vercel can help if the frontend fits their criteria. You can also reduce usage by putting preview and staging environments on cheaper infrastructure and scheduling idle services to sleep.
I only need Vercel for the frontend, but the project is backend-heavy, so backend sponsorship is what would help most. I’ve still been fortunate to receive support from a few developer-focused services, including a temporary Claude allowance and documentation tooling.
Add a visible Sponsor button and a FUNDING.yml file so potential supporters can easily find the project’s funding options. For hosting, Oracle Cloud’s free tier can work for a production-style backend, while Netlify is a good free option for a frontend. The main catch is that Oracle’s account verification can be difficult, especially if your payment card isn’t accepted.
I already have the Sponsor button and a separate sponsorship page, although I’m mostly building this for fun and to share something useful. Oracle Cloud was appealing, but I couldn’t get through the signup because it rejected my debit card.

Thanks, I’ll look into it. Do you remember roughly how much credit you received, and how large or popular your project was at the time?
