I'm looking for the best all-around CPU for a budget-conscious build. I do some gaming, but the bigger workload is re-encoding media for my Plex server—sometimes thousands of files over the course of a week or more. I'm open to either AMD or Intel and care more about overall price-to-performance than brand loyalty. Which specific CPU, platform, or bundle would make the most sense for this workload?

If you can get one of the bundle deals, the Intel Core Ultra 7 265K or Core Ultra 9 285K packages can be very compelling, especially when the motherboard and memory are included. Without a bundle, compare the total platform cost against AMD options rather than looking only at the CPU price. AMD frequently has competitive motherboard and memory bundles too, so the best choice may depend on what deals are available when you buy.
For frequent video encoding, Intel is worth considering because its integrated graphics can provide useful hardware encoding support through Quick Sync, while the CPU handles workloads that still require software encoding. A dedicated Intel Arc GPU could encode even faster, but GPU compatibility can vary between games and applications. If you prefer CPU-based transcoding and want fewer gaming compatibility concerns, choose a strong Intel CPU and make sure the Plex software is configured to use the available hardware features.
I tried an Intel Arc graphics card before, but some games I play would not launch with it installed, so I went back to NVIDIA. I’m mainly interested in keeping the transcoding on the CPU anyway.
