What CPU should I upgrade to from a Ryzen 5 2600?

I have a PC built around 2017 with a Ryzen 5 2600, a Gigabyte RTX 3070 Ti, and 16 GB of 3200 MHz RAM. I recently started gaming again and noticed performance feels slow. My CPU usage reaches 100% while the GPU usually stays around 30–40%, so I'm wondering which CPU would pair well with the 3070 Ti and whether the processor is the main bottleneck. I'd prefer an upgrade that works on my current AM4 platform if possible.

The 3070 Ti is still capable of handling modern games, so there’s no urgent need to replace it just because it’s an older card. For this build, upgrading the CPU first makes the most sense. If you’re planning a completely new platform soon, compare the total cost of an AM5 CPU, motherboard, and DDR5 memory; otherwise, staying on AM4 with a 5600, 5700X, or 5700X3D is simpler.

If you want the strongest gaming upgrade without replacing the motherboard, look at the Ryzen 7 5700X3D. Its extra cache can improve gaming performance significantly and should let the RTX 3070 Ti stretch its legs for a while longer. It’s worth considering if the price is reasonable, but a 5600 or 5700X offers better value for a tighter budget.

I wouldn’t spend 5800X3D money on this system unless you specifically want the maximum AM4 gaming upgrade. A Ryzen 5 5600 is usually enough to fix the bottleneck without spending too much.

Check CPU and GPU usage while a game is running, but based on the CPU hitting 100% while the GPU is only at 30–40%, the Ryzen 5 2600 is probably holding things back. A Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X is a cost-effective upgrade, especially if you already have an AM4 motherboard. Make sure the motherboard supports it and update the BIOS first if necessary. You may also want a decent tower cooler instead of the original stock cooler.
