What CPU upgrade makes sense for my current PC and $200–$300 budget?

I'm very inexperienced with PC hardware and want to upgrade my CPU. My current build includes an H310 motherboard, an Intel 9th-generation-compatible socket, recently upgraded RAM, a newer power supply, and an RTX 3060. I'd like a noticeable CPU improvement without creating a major imbalance with the rest of the system. My budget is roughly $200–$300 in the United States. Should I upgrade to the best processor my current motherboard supports, or would it make more sense to replace the motherboard and move to a newer platform?

Before buying anything, check what is actually limiting performance. Use an in-game performance overlay and watch CPU and GPU usage: if the CPU is near 100% while the GPU is well below full utilization, a CPU upgrade should help. If the GPU is consistently maxed out, replacing the CPU may not noticeably improve gaming performance.

The Ryzen 5000 suggestions are good, but they require a new motherboard because they use AMD’s AM4 socket rather than your current Intel board. Also, don’t plan around AM5 while keeping this RAM—AM5 systems generally require DDR5, which would push the total cost higher.

For a new platform, a Ryzen 5 5600 paired with a B550 motherboard is a strong value option and should fit your budget. You can reuse your DDR4 memory and RTX 3060, though your 2400-speed RAM is fairly slow. A 2x16GB DDR4-3200 or DDR4-3600 kit would be a worthwhile future upgrade, particularly for multitasking.

If you want to avoid replacing the motherboard, look for a used i7-9700 or i9-9900K. The i9-9900K is the fastest realistic upgrade for that LGA 1151 board, but the i7-9700 is often a better value. Check your motherboard’s BIOS support and make sure your cooler is adequate, especially for the i9.
