I upgraded to a Ryzen 7 9700X last year but kept my RTX 3060. It has served me well, though it's starting to show its age. I currently game at 1080p and am also considering moving to a higher-resolution monitor. Now that my budget is a little more flexible, what graphics card would make the most sense with this CPU? I've been considering used RTX 3080s and newer cards like the RX 9070 XT, but I'm not sure which option offers the best value. My target resolution, refresh rate, and budget are still flexible.

Before choosing, figure out your target resolution, frame rate, and total budget. The 9070 XT makes the most sense for high-refresh 1440p or entry-level 4K, while the regular 9070 is plenty for standard 1440p. Nvidia may be preferable if you specifically need CUDA or its ray-tracing and upscaling features, but otherwise AMD cards currently tend to offer better gaming value.
I made a similar jump from an RTX 3060 Ti to the RX 9070 XT and the performance increase was huge. A 1440p display running at 165 Hz or higher would let you actually see the benefit. An OLED panel is a great upgrade if it fits your budget, though a good mini-LED monitor can be a better choice for mixed work and gaming.
I’m using a 9700X with an RX 9070 XT and the combination has been excellent. I’d skip buying an older 3080 unless you find an unusually good deal, and I’d prioritize a monitor upgrade alongside the GPU so the upgrade feels worthwhile.
Other reasonable current options are the RTX 5070, RTX 5070 Ti, RX 9070, RX 9070 XT, and, if you stay at 1080p, lower-tier 16 GB cards such as the RX 9060 XT or RTX 5060 Ti. Used RTX 3080s can still perform well, but I wouldn’t pay close to the price of a newer card for one that is already several generations old.
For a new build around this CPU, the Radeon RX 9070 XT is probably the strongest value choice, especially if you move to 1440p. The regular RX 9070 is also a good option if you want to spend a bit less. I’d pair either one with a 1440p monitor rather than continuing to invest in 1080p.
That makes sense. I was mainly looking at the 3080 because of the used prices, but I’ll compare the total cost against a newer 9070 or 9070 XT.
