I built my PC in 2018 with a Ryzen 5 2600X, GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB of DDR4-2400 memory, a 550W 80+ Gold power supply, and a B450M motherboard. I'm planning to build a completely new PC eventually, but I can't afford that right now, so I'd like to upgrade the graphics card first. My goal is to play most games comfortably at 1080p on low or medium settings while spending as little as possible. I'm considering cards such as the RTX 3060, preferably the 12GB model, or the RX 6650 XT. Would either work well with my current system and power supply? Should I also upgrade the CPU, memory, or monitor to avoid a bottleneck, or would 1080p still be the best choice until I can afford a new build?

A GPU upgrade will work without replacing the rest of the system. The RX 6600 or RX 6650 XT would be a major improvement over the GTX 1060 and should pair reasonably well with the 2600X for 1080p gaming. A 12GB RTX 3060 is also a sensible option if you need NVIDIA features or find one at a good price. Your 550W power supply should be enough for these cards.
For a balanced, cost-conscious upgrade, I’d look at an RX 6650 XT, RTX 3060 12GB, or a similar card such as an RTX 4060 or RX 7600. Choose based mainly on the local price and whether you prefer AMD or NVIDIA features. Going much faster than that while keeping the 2600X may leave performance on the table in some games, especially at high frame rates.
If you plan to carry the graphics card into a future build, buying a stronger current-generation card can make sense, but only if your budget allows it. Otherwise, avoid overspending on a high-end GPU now. A Ryzen 5 5600 paired with an RX 6650 XT or a similar midrange card would be a much more balanced upgrade for 1080p.
You don’t need to buy a 1440p monitor just to reduce a CPU bottleneck. If you want an inexpensive platform upgrade, update the B450M BIOS and replace the 2600X with a Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 5 5500. Selling the old CPU can make the change fairly cheap, and the newer processor will give you better minimum frame rates and let you use a stronger GPU later.
Make sure the BIOS update is done before installing the newer Ryzen chip. Also, the existing 16GB of RAM will work, although faster DDR4-3200 memory would be a worthwhile upgrade if you can find it cheaply.
