I built my PC in 2018 and currently have a Ryzen 5 2600X, GTX 1060 6GB, 16GB of DDR4-2400 memory, a 550W 80+ Gold power supply, and a B450M motherboard. I would like to upgrade the graphics card now and build a completely new PC later, since I cannot afford to replace everything yet. My goal is to play most games comfortably at 1080p on low or medium settings. I have been considering an RTX 3060, preferably the 12GB model, or an RX 6650 XT. Can I install one of these without replacing my other components? Would moving to a 1440p monitor reduce CPU bottleneck, or would a CPU upgrade be more useful? I would like to spend as little as possible while still getting a meaningful upgrade.

The biggest balanced upgrade would be a Ryzen 5 5600 alongside an RX 6600 or RX 6650 XT. Your B450 motherboard should support it after a BIOS update, so check the supported CPU list and update the BIOS before replacing the processor. The 5600 would reduce CPU limits in newer games and make the system feel more balanced without requiring a new platform.
If you want a card that can be carried into a future build, you could spend more on a newer 8GB or 16GB model. However, for your current target of 1080p low or medium settings, going much beyond an RX 6650 XT or RTX 3060 is likely poor value unless you also plan to replace the CPU soon. A stronger card may sit underused in this system.
Your 16GB of RAM is usable, but DDR4-2400 is slower than ideal for Ryzen. After the CPU and GPU upgrade, consider replacing it with a matched 2x16GB DDR4-3200 kit if you can find one cheaply. That is not essential for the graphics upgrade, though, so prioritize the GPU and a Ryzen 5 5600 first.
An RX 6600, RX 6650 XT, RTX 3060 12GB, RTX 4060, or a similar midrange card would be a reasonable match. Your 550W power supply should be sufficient for these models, assuming it is in good condition. Pick whichever has the best price in your area. You do not need to switch to 1440p just to deal with a bottleneck; that usually makes the GPU work harder and can reduce frame rates.
A used card can also be a good value here, but I would check its power requirements and condition before buying.
You can upgrade the GPU first if the budget is tight. The 2600X will still work, although some CPU-heavy games may not reach the card's full potential.
