What lightweight Linux distributions still have a modern-looking desktop?

Whenever I search for a lightweight Linux distribution, I mostly find extremely minimal systems designed for machines with tiny amounts of RAM, and many of them have an old-fashioned Windows XP-style appearance. Are there any relatively lightweight options with a more modern desktop environment, even if they use somewhat more storage and memory?

The hardware matters more than the distribution name. If the computer has around 4 GB of RAM or more, you probably do not need an ultra-lightweight system. A normal distribution with Xfce, LXQt, or even KDE Plasma should be perfectly usable, while web browsers will usually consume more memory than the desktop itself.

Xfce is probably the best balance. It is lightweight, but it can look very modern with a good theme, icons, a dock, and a little layout customization. Linux Mint Xfce, MX Linux with Xfce, and Ubuntu-based Xfce setups are all worth considering.

Definitely. Xfce looks pretty plain by default, but it changes a lot once you customize the panel, theme, icons, and dock.

For maximum flexibility, start with a minimal Debian, Arch, or Fedora installation and add a window manager such as Sway, River, Labwc, Wayfire, or Niri. With tools like a panel, launcher, compositor, and dock, you can build a sleek desktop that remains very lean. The tradeoff is that this takes more setup than installing a complete desktop environment.

LXQt can be made to look surprisingly modern with a decent theme, and Q4OS with the Trinity desktop is another lightweight option with lots of appearance settings. Lubuntu is also a straightforward choice if you want something simple and low on resource usage.
