I haven't built a gaming PC in more than ten years, so I'd appreciate some guidance. I'm in Canada with a budget of about $4,500 CAD, and I already have a 55-inch 4K LG G4 OLED TV that will be my main gaming display. I'm considering an RTX 5080, Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and 32GB of DDR5 memory. I may add a 1440p OLED monitor later, but image quality matters more to me than maximizing frame rate. Is the 5080 worth the significant premium over the RTX 5070 Ti for 4K gaming, especially for demanding lighting effects, or would the cheaper card be a better choice? I'd also welcome suggestions for the rest of the build and for making a PC convenient to use from the couch.

Look for bundle pricing on the processor, motherboard, and memory. Retailer bundles can sometimes save roughly $100–$200 CAD, which could help offset the cost of the graphics card or improve another part of the build. Just compare the included motherboard and RAM against buying each component separately instead of assuming every bundle is a good deal.
Since the PC will be connected to a TV, plan for the living-room experience as well as the components. A wireless controller with a dedicated USB receiver can be more reliable than Bluetooth, and some receivers let you wake the PC from the controller. Software such as LG TV Companion can also wake the television and switch it to the correct input when the computer starts, which makes couch gaming much less annoying.
A 4K TV doesn’t require every game to run at native 4K with maximum settings. A slightly lower internal resolution, upscaling, or reduced detail settings can still look excellent from the couch. A 9070 XT-class system has been enough for comfortable 4K TV gaming, and you can always tune settings per game. If you add a 1440p monitor later, the same PC should handle that resolution easily.
The 9800X3D, 32GB of DDR5, and a high-end graphics card make sense for this use case. The main decision is the GPU: the 5070 Ti can handle 4K well with sensible settings and upscaling, but the 5080 gives you more headroom for higher-quality ray tracing and newer games. If you prioritize visual quality and want to keep the system longer, the 5080 is easier to justify; otherwise, putting the savings toward a future upgrade could be better value.
Future GPU release timing is uncertain, so I wouldn’t base the decision on a specific rumored launch date. Choose the card that meets your needs now rather than assuming an upgrade will arrive on schedule.
My hesitation with the 5070 Ti is that many reviews position it more toward 1440p. I care more about graphics quality than maximum performance, so I’m trying to decide whether the extra cost of the 5080 is worthwhile for 4K and better lighting effects.
