What Should I Explore During My CS Summer Break?

Learning backend fundamentals is a strong option because it teaches concepts that transfer across many technologies. Focus on HTTP, APIs, databases, authentication, concurrency, and system design rather than tying yourself to one framework. You can sample a few technology stacks, then go deeper into the one you enjoy most.

Start with something you genuinely want to exist and work backward from there. Build the smallest useful version first, then learn whatever concepts are needed to improve it. This is usually more effective than choosing a programming language or framework and spending months following tutorials without making anything.

Computer science is broad, so try a few areas instead of committing immediately. Small projects in web development, backend systems, databases, networking, cybersecurity, and AI or machine learning can help you figure out what holds your interest. Pay attention to which problems you enjoy solving, not just which tools seem popular.

You could also watch short introductory courses on several areas to get a high-level sense of what they involve, then choose two or three for hands-on experiments. The basics of programming—loops, functions, data structures, and problem-solving—will remain useful regardless of the direction you choose.
