What should I learn after JavaScript if web development doesn’t appeal to me?

You don’t necessarily need a new language to move away from front-end work. Node.js lets you use JavaScript for command-line tools, automation, backend services, and other projects that aren’t centered on browser interfaces.

Learning the fundamentals matters more than finding a supposedly AI-proof language. Once you understand programming concepts well, switching between high-level languages is much easier. Try a few small projects in different areas and see which type of work actually holds your interest.

Haskell can be an interesting choice if you want something very different from JavaScript. Its functional approach and strong type system encourage careful design, though it has a steeper learning curve and may be less immediately practical than Go, C#, or Python.

I wouldn’t pick a language solely because you hope AI won’t affect it. No area is guaranteed to be untouched, so choose based on what you want to build. C# is useful for desktop software and introduces static typing, while Python is a strong choice for automation, data analysis, and scripting.

If you want to try a different style of programming, Go is worth a look. It has straightforward syntax, a solid standard library, built-in testing tools, and a fairly deliberate design. C is another option if you want to understand lower-level concepts, memory, and how software works closer to the machine.
