I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 3600 with an RTX 3060 and usually get around 100 FPS in FPS games at 1920×1080 on the lowest settings. I'd like to upgrade the rest of my PC while keeping the 3060 for now, and I'm leaning toward moving to AMD's AM5 platform. I may buy a 240Hz monitor soon, so I'd appreciate recommendations for the CPU, motherboard, RAM, and any other components. I don't have a strict budget, but I'd prefer good value.

Don’t overlook the graphics card. A faster CPU can help with competitive 1080p gaming, but an RTX 3060 may not deliver 240 FPS consistently in every title, even at low settings. Start with the CPU and platform upgrade if you want a foundation for a future GPU upgrade, then replace the graphics card later when you need more sustained frame rate.
If you want the cheapest upgrade and your current motherboard supports it, a Ryzen 5 5600X3D or Ryzen 7 5800X3D can provide a substantial gaming improvement without replacing the board and DDR4 RAM. Make sure the motherboard BIOS supports the processor and that the VRM and CPU cooler are adequate. This is better value than moving to AM5 if you’re trying to minimize the total upgrade cost.
There isn’t a strict need to buy an expensive top-tier CPU immediately if your games are GPU-limited. Check GPU and CPU usage while playing: near-100% GPU usage means the graphics card is holding you back, while a heavily loaded CPU with low GPU usage points toward a processor upgrade. Also make sure you have at least 32GB of RAM and enable your memory’s EXPO profile.
For a new AM5 build, a Ryzen 7 7800X3D—or a newer equivalent if pricing is better—would be a strong choice for high-refresh-rate gaming. Pair it with a B650 motherboard and 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory. Your RTX 3060 can stay for now, but at 1080p and very high frame rates it may eventually become the limiting component.
I’m specifically leaning toward AM5, so I’d rather replace the platform than invest more in AM4.
