I'm looking to upgrade my current PC without moving to AM5, since a complete new build would be far more expensive than I want to spend right now. I use the system for both work and gaming, mainly competitive 1080p titles where I'd like to stay near 240 FPS.
My current hardware is a Ryzen 5 5600X on an MSI B550-A PRO motherboard, 32GB of DDR4-3200 memory, and an RTX 3060 12GB. Storage includes a 256GB SATA SSD and a 2TB hard drive, and I'm using a Samsung Odyssey G40B 240Hz monitor.
My main game is Counter-Strike 2, where I used to average over 400 FPS but now see around 160 FPS. I also play League of Legends, Minecraft, Overwatch, Rainbow Six Siege, Civilization, Forza, and F1. I'm willing to spend roughly $350 on a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and would consider upgrading the graphics card too if the RTX 3060 would hold back the system. What would be the best upgrade path to keep this PC going for a few more years before eventually building an AM5 system?

The RTX 3060 may be perfectly adequate for many of your games at 1080p, especially with sensible settings. For Counter-Strike 2, the 5600X is more likely to be the limiting factor, so I’d upgrade the CPU first and test the results before buying a graphics card. If you still need more GPU performance, a card around the RTX 5070, RTX 5070 Ti, RX 9070, or RX 9070 XT class would make a much larger difference.
The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the obvious top-end gaming upgrade for this motherboard. It should help a lot with CPU-limited games such as Counter-Strike 2 and give you better frame-time consistency. Your B550 board and DDR4 memory can stay, so it’s a relatively simple platform upgrade.
That’s the CPU upgrade I’m leaning toward. My main concern is whether the RTX 3060 will still be enough afterward.
A graphics card upgrade by itself is also reasonable if your main limitation is GPU usage rather than CPU performance. Something in the RTX 5060 or RTX 5070 range should work well with the 5600X, although for consistently high frame rates in Counter-Strike 2, the 5800X3D is still the more targeted upgrade. Check CPU and GPU utilization while playing before deciding.
The 5800X3D is a strong match for the RTX 3060 and should extend the life of the system. Just keep in mind that AM4 is a finished upgrade platform, so spending heavily on both parts may not be the best value if you plan to replace the whole PC soon. A CPU upgrade now and a GPU later is the safer approach.
I’m comfortable spending on the 5800X3D and possibly a GPU if it lets me delay a complete rebuild until AM5 prices become more reasonable.
For competitive games, lowering a few graphics settings is usually enough to stay responsive. You don’t necessarily need to match 240 FPS in every title to benefit from a 240Hz display.
