What’s causing intermittent SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION crashes while gaming on Windows 11?

My Windows 11 PC occasionally crashes to a SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION blue screen while I'm gaming. It only happens every couple of months, so it isn't severely disruptive, but I'd like to identify the underlying cause. WhoCrashed reports a general software or driver-related problem without clearly naming the culprit. I have one minidump available for analysis, although older dumps may have been deleted or cleaned up. A previous Windows update, KB5121003, also caused more frequent blue screens with different stop codes, so I'm currently running a version from before that update. What should I check, and are there any known driver, DirectX, BIOS, or power-mode issues that could explain this?

More minidumps would make it much easier to identify a consistent cause. The dump that is available appears to point toward DirectX, but that does not necessarily mean DirectX itself is defective—it could also involve the graphics driver or another component interacting with it. If another crash occurs, preserve the files in C:WindowsMinidump and upload several together.

The strongest lead is a possible Windows kernel pool-tracking issue affecting systems based on Intel Arrow Lake HX platforms. There may not be a reliable fix yet, but try switching Windows from a high-performance power plan to Balanced and avoid aggressive performance or C-state settings. Also check for BIOS, chipset, graphics-driver, and Windows updates from the laptop manufacturer and Microsoft.

That matches what I’ve been seeing. Update KB5121003 caused frequent crashes with several different stop codes, so I rolled back to a version from before it. Since the crashes are now rare, I may need to wait for a later Windows or firmware update and collect more dumps if it happens again.
