I upgraded to an RX 9060 XT 16GB about a year ago, but in some games—especially simulation titles—the GPU isn't fully utilized while the CPU is heavily loaded. I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 5600 and would prefer to stay on AM4 rather than pay for a new motherboard and expensive DDR5 memory. I mainly play at 1080p, including Euro Truck Simulator 2, BeamNG.drive, and Forza Horizon, usually with normal to ultra settings. My budget is up to €300 for a new or used processor. What would be the most worthwhile upgrade, and are there settings or other changes I should try first?

Before replacing the CPU, check whether the processor is actually limiting performance. At 1080p, some simulation games can become CPU-bound, but GPU usage below 100% by itself doesn’t prove there’s a serious bottleneck. Check per-core CPU usage, frame rates, and frametime consistency in the specific games you play. Also, a CPU cannot really be used at more than 100% overall—one or more cores may simply be fully loaded.
The 5600 is still a capable processor, and the RX 9060 XT isn’t so powerful that it will overwhelm it in every game. A CPU upgrade is most worthwhile if you want higher minimum FPS or are seeing stuttering in particular titles. If performance is already acceptable, spending the money on a 1440p monitor or tuning settings may produce a more noticeable improvement.
For an AM4 gaming upgrade, the Ryzen 7 5700X3D is probably the best value if you can find one within budget. A used Ryzen 7 5800X3D is also a strong option, though it usually costs more and may not provide enough extra performance to justify the price. The extra cache can help a lot in simulation and CPU-heavy games, but it won’t eliminate every bottleneck.
You may not need a CPU upgrade immediately. Moving from 1080p to 1440p shifts more of the workload toward the graphics card, and an RX 9060 XT 16GB should handle 1440p well with sensible settings. It can improve the balance of the system, although it won’t fix CPU limits in simulation games that are heavily dependent on one or two cores.
That makes sense. I’ll compare prices for a 5700X3D and a used 5800X3D before deciding.
