I was given a refurbished Dell OptiPlex 7010 Small Form Factor desktop, but it struggles with even simple games. I'm not very experienced with PC upgrades. It has 16GB of RAM using two 8GB sticks, an Intel Core i5-3550 running at 3.3GHz, and it appears to be using the processor's integrated graphics with only 32MB of dedicated display memory. I have about $100 to spend and don't need a powerful gaming PC—I mainly want smoother performance in games such as Minecraft and other lightweight titles. What upgrade would make the biggest difference, and are there any compatibility or power-supply limits I should know about?

For Minecraft, install a performance mod such as Sodium after adding the graphics card. It can significantly improve frame rates, especially at normal render distances. Keep expectations realistic: this is still an older office computer, but a suitable low-profile GPU should make basic games much smoother.
Your 16GB of RAM is already adequate, so upgrading the memory probably won’t help much. The integrated graphics are the main problem. A low-profile RX 550 or GT 1030 can be a relatively inexpensive option for Minecraft and older or lightweight games, though make sure it uses GDDR5 memory rather than a slower variant.
The biggest improvement would be a used low-profile graphics card. Look for an RX 550, GT 1030, GTX 1050, or GTX 1050 Ti specifically designed for small-form-factor cases. Choose a model that does not require a six-pin power connector, since the stock power supply may not provide one. Check the card’s physical dimensions and your power-supply wattage before buying.
A low-profile GTX 1050 Ti can work well if you find one at a reasonable used price, but don’t spend too much on this system. The i5-3550 platform is quite old, and the power supply and case limit your choices. If a suitable graphics card costs close to $100 or more, putting that money toward a newer used office PC with a more recent processor may be better long-term.
There isn’t a third-generation Core i9. For this platform, the top mainstream upgrade would be an i7-3770, but replacing the CPU is usually less useful for gaming than adding a compatible graphics card.
