What’s the best DDR4 CPU upgrade from an i7-8700K for an RTX 5070?

I recently upgraded from a GTX 1070 Ti to an RTX 5070 and also installed a 1000W EVGA power supply. My current system uses an i7-8700K, but I'm concerned it may hold back the new graphics card, especially in CPU-heavy games such as Rust, where I'm struggling to maintain 40 FPS at 1080p on low settings. Since the existing socket has very limited upgrade options, I'm willing to replace both the motherboard and CPU. I'd like a substantial upgrade while continuing to use DDR4 memory. My CPU budget is roughly $100–$400, and motherboard recommendations would be helpful too.

Before replacing everything, check your actual GPU and CPU usage in the games you play. A bottleneck isn’t automatically a problem if you’re getting the frame rate your monitor can display. That said, an 8700K paired with an RTX 5070 is an uneven combination, and CPU-heavy games at 1080p are where a newer processor like the 5800X3D or 14600K will show the biggest improvement.

The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is probably the strongest gaming-focused DDR4 option. Pair it with a B550 motherboard and a decent cooler. It’s the top-end AM4 gaming chip, so it makes sense if you want to keep your existing DDR4 memory, although check local pricing because availability can vary.

A 12th-generation Intel chip such as the i7-12700K or i9-12900K is also a major step up and works with DDR4 motherboards. The 12900K needs a capable cooler and decent motherboard power delivery, so the 12700K may be the better-balanced choice if you want to control heat and cost.

An Intel Core i5-14600K with a DDR4-compatible B760 or Z690/Z790 board would be a great all-around upgrade from the 8700K. It has strong gaming and productivity performance and is often available at a good price. Make sure the board supports DDR4 rather than DDR5.
