Our infrastructure team needs to build and operate Docker environments for development, testing, and production, but we are not responsible for application development or the broader DevOps workflow. We understand the basics from experimenting and now want focused training on the operational side: securing container and host networks, reverse-proxy design, access controls, image repositories, integrating developer workflows with the servers, and general production management best practices. Most training we've found focuses heavily on building applications and deployment pipelines, so we're looking for resources aimed more at server and platform administrators. Hands-on labs are welcome, but security and sound operational practices are especially important.

Docker is commonly used as part of a DevOps platform, but that doesn’t mean the infrastructure team has to own application development. For a more hands-off operational experience, look at Portainer for administration, access control, registry integration, and a useful GUI. Coolify is another option, although it leans more toward simplifying application deployment. Hands-on practice with a small lab will still be necessary, especially for networking, storage, TLS, image lifecycle management, and host security.
Be careful with the assumption that the infrastructure team can ignore the deployment side completely. You don’t need to become application developers, but you do need clear contracts with the development team: approved base images, image naming and tagging, vulnerability thresholds, port and volume rules, resource limits, health checks, rollback behavior, and who owns each part of the service. A repository and a management tool can help, but they won’t replace those policies.
For this role, I’d search specifically for Docker administration, container security, Docker networking, private registry administration, and production container operations rather than general Docker or application-development courses. Build a lab with separate hosts or environments and document how you’ll handle firewalling, least-privilege access, secrets, image scanning, patching, backups, logging, TLS termination, and recovery. Those operational details are where most beginner courses are too shallow.
Experimenting is useful for learning the commands, but it won’t automatically teach secure defaults. Treat the lab as a place to test failure scenarios and validate the controls you plan to use in production.
There’s a legitimate distinction between managing the platform that runs containers and developing the applications inside them. Your team probably wants training in container-platform administration, even though that work overlaps with DevOps in many organizations. Make sure the course covers Docker Engine and host hardening, daemon exposure, rootless containers, network isolation, volumes, registries, reverse proxies, authentication, monitoring, and upgrade procedures—not just writing Dockerfiles and building images.
