My current graphics card is an AMD RX 580-2048SP, and I tend to keep GPUs for many years. My previous card was a GeForce GT 1030, so I'm used to prioritizing affordable low-end performance and only upgrading when basic tasks or games become difficult. This time, I'd like to roughly double my current performance, mainly for modern 1080p gaming and everyday use. I'm considering an RTX 3050, but I'm not sure it offers enough improvement and I don't want to buy the first inexpensive option I find. What new or used card would you recommend for under $500 CAD, and which Canadian retailers or marketplaces are reliable?

The Intel Arc B580 is probably the strongest new option in this price range, provided your system supports Resizable BAR. Your i5-9400 may be adequate, but check that your motherboard BIOS has ReBAR enabled. If it doesn’t, an RX 7600 or a good used card would be a safer choice.
I’d skip the RTX 3050 unless you find the 8GB version at a very low price, around $220–$250 CAD. The 6GB model is especially unattractive and may perform close to your current card. A used RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3070, or RTX 3070 Ti would be a much bigger jump, while a used RTX 3080 around $350–$500 could be excellent value if you can verify its condition and power requirements.
Look at used or refurbished deals rather than limiting yourself to entry-level new cards. The RX 6700 XT is an overlooked option with strong 1080p performance, and used RX 6600 XT, RTX 3060 Ti, or RTX 3070 cards can offer much better value than an RTX 3050. Check reputable local retailers, refurbished listings, and established marketplaces, and avoid deals without clear photos or testing information.
The best choice depends on how much you want to spend and whether you need a new card. For a strict new-card purchase, the B580 is compelling if ReBAR works on your system. For used cards, consider an RX 6700 XT, RTX 3070, or possibly an RX 7700 XT if you find a discount. A high-end used card may also expose a CPU limitation in some games, but it will still be a substantial upgrade over the RX 580-2048SP.
A used RTX 3070 is probably the safer target at this budget. RTX 3080 cards can be found under $500 CAD, but availability and condition vary a lot.
