I have a Windows 11 laptop with Find My Device enabled. My main priority is being able to locate it if it's stolen, rather than protecting the files stored on it. How useful is Microsoft's built-in tracking, and are there any other practical options I should set up in advance?

Windows Find My Device can show the laptop’s last known location and may let you lock it, but it only works while the device is powered on, connected to the internet, and still linked to your Microsoft account. If someone wipes the drive or reinstalls Windows, that tracking method will stop working. You can check the device through Microsoft’s device-account page when needed.
For the best chance of locating the physical laptop after it’s stolen, hide a small Bluetooth tracker inside the case if there’s a safe place for it. Some trackers can use nearby phones to update their approximate location, though they have range, battery, and notification limitations. Don’t approach a suspected thief yourself; give any location information to law enforcement.
A technically experienced thief could erase the drive and install Windows again, which bypasses most software-based tracking. A BIOS password may make that less convenient, but it isn’t a reliable tracking solution and can potentially be defeated by replacing or resetting hardware. It’s also worth reporting the serial number to the police and keeping proof of ownership, although recovery isn’t guaranteed.
